Dental crowns, or “caps,” cover entire visible portions of damaged teeth, protecting them from further harm while restoring their appearance and function. The crown process typically requires two appointments. During the first visit, we prepare the tooth by removing damaged portions and shaping it to accommodate the crown. We take detailed impressions or digital scans of your prepared tooth and surrounding teeth, place a temporary crown protecting the tooth while your permanent crown is fabricated, and select the shade matching your natural teeth.
At your second appointment, we remove the temporary crown, check the fit and appearance of your permanent crown, make any necessary adjustments, and cement the crown permanently in place. Modern dental crowns look and function like natural teeth, and with proper care they last 10-15 years or longer.
We offer various crown materials including porcelain fused to metal (strong and relatively natural-looking), all-porcelain or all-ceramic (most natural appearance, ideal for front teeth), gold alloys (extremely durable, best for back teeth), and zirconia (combines strength and aesthetics). We’ll recommend the best material based on the tooth’s location, your bite forces, and aesthetic concerns.
